The Science of Spelling Workshop
The Science of Spelling: Assessment, Instruction, and Intervention (K–3)
May 9 | 9:00–1:00 EST | Live on Zoom
A research-informed, highly practical workshop designed to help you improve spelling instruction without adding more to your plate.
This session focuses on what drives spelling development and how to translate that into efficient, high-impact instruction you can use immediately.
What You’ll Learn
This workshop is organized around three core questions:
Part 1: Why Spelling Matters
We’ll briefly ground the work in what the research actually shows:
How spelling supports word reading, writing, and overall literacy development
Why spelling is not just “output,” but a driver of orthographic learning
What often gets misunderstood about spelling instruction
Part 2: How to Teach It
This is where we spend most of our time: instruction that works in real classrooms.
You’ll learn how to:
Use 15-minute, stackable routines that build spelling skill over time
Focus on the active ingredients of effective spelling instruction (not just activities)
Teach spelling in a way that reflects how English works, including the complexity of vowel patterns and probabilities
Understand why a spelling scope and sequence may differ from from phonics, and how to plan accordingly
Move away from a mass amounts of “rules” toward flexible, decision-based instruction
Part 3: Assessment → Instruction → Intervention
We’ll connect assessment directly to action.
You’ll learn how to:
Use a simple spelling inventory to identify where to begin
Conduct error analysis to understand student thinking
Make instructional decisions based on patterns to support students who are slow or non-responders with targeted strategies
Progress monitor spelling in a way that informs instruction
Who This Is For

Interventionists and specialists
Instructional coaches
Anyone looking to strengthen spelling as part of literacy instruction
What You’ll Leave With
Printable routines and resources for spelling instruction
Flexible, research-informed instructional routines
Guidance for thinking through spelling scope and sequence
