The Intensive Intervention Lab

Using Data to Drive Secondary Reading Intervention

A 2-hour hands-on session to build your reading assessment + data-based individuation plan

This intensive intervention lab is a practical, working session designed for secondary educators who want to deepen their practice around data-based individualization (DBI) and intensify reading instruction for students who need more. Whether you're a teacher, interventionist, special educator, instructional coach, or tutor, this session will guide you step-by-step through using diagnostic and progress monitoring data to design and adjust effective word reading interventions for Grades 5–12.

What’s Data-Based Individualization? (DBI)

Data-Based Individualization (DBI) is a research-validated framework for intensifying instruction using a systematic, ongoing cycle of assessment, instructional decision-making, and adaptation (Fuchs & Fuchs, 2021). DBI is especially critical for students who do not respond adequately to Tier 1 or Tier 2 instruction.

In the context of adolescent word reading intervention, DBI helps educators:

  • Use diagnostic data to identify specific skill deficits (e.g., decoding, morphology, fluency)

  • Set individualized goals

  • Monitor student response to intervention over time

  • Adapt and intensify instruction when needed based on data trends

What You’ll Build During the Lab:

  • A customized reading assessment protocol for your classroom or school

  • A student profile-to-instruction map that helps you choose the right intervention adaptation (dosage, alignment, explicitness, executive function support)

  • A complete DBI action plan, including:

    • Measurable goals

    • Progress monitoring schedule

    • Clear “intensification rules” for slow responders

    • A digital progress monitoring template to support implementation

You’ll leave with ready-to-use planning tools, digital progress monitoring templates, and a certificate for 2 hours of professional development.

This virtual workshop will take place on 8/23/2025 from 10-12 CST.

Limited to 25 participants.

All proceeds from this workshop help fund sliding-scale and pro bono advocacy services for families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to access expert support. Your registration supports both your learning and someone else’s opportunity.
